Does Condi Rice like comic strips?

bo031014.gif Who knew that when the Washington Post decided not to run a cartoon strip, it would set off a flurry of rumours about Condi Rice's sexuality? Richard Blow started off a column with the words "Does Aaron McGruder think that Condoleeza Rice is a lesbian?" and was then picked up by Page Six in an piece which Low Culture considers tantamount to an outing. Meanwhile, Daniel Radosh, while ostensibly criticising the strip, still manages to get in this:

If you missed it, it hinged on whether Condi preferred black men or white men. And I know what you're thinking: men?

Virtually all unmarried women in the executive branch suffer – if that's the right word – from rumours that they're gay. Certainly it happened with Albright and Reno, and even strong married women like Hillary Clinton. In this case, people seem willing to use anything to give themselves an excuse to make the allegation: after all, the comic strip is quite explicitly about Condi Rice finding love with a man, and not a woman. Rice has said nothing, as far as I know, which would open her up to charges of hyprocrisy if she turned out to be gay. Her sexuality should be her own affair, especially as her whole job is to be taken seriously in a Bush White House crammed to bursting with fulminating John Ashcroft types.

This pisses me off but good. The rumors of lesbianism are one thing, whatever, fuck every man who thinks she must be a dyke because she's a strong (if morally reprehensible) woman. But the whole if she loved a man thing? God, that's fucking retarded. How utterly stupid. Dehumanization of people who believe awful things or behave awfully doesn't teach us anything about who they are and why they're like that. It's just worthless.

i think people are responding too much to the gendered issue, the insertion of one word ("man") in the strip...

my reading is and always has been-- it is implied that aaron is (probably rightly) assuming that she is straight, and merely saying that a human who cannot for all practical purposes demonstrate love can't be trusted in humanitarian professions like politics and diplomacy.

that's the joke, to me, pure and simple. phrasing issues seem to have given other elements a disproportionate amount of weight, but, hey....hello, gregg easterbrook.

So you're saying that the if Condoleeza just loved the violent Jews of Hollywood then she wouldn't be a armaggedon-loving warpig?

I kinda buy that.

Grr. IF the Condoleeza. AN Armaggedon.

Does it really say what you say it says? Seems to me it's open to many interpretations, not only that one that calls for her dating men over women. Men over no-one? Love over bitter singleness? Also, if she was a lesbian, why would dating a man make her less of an armageddon-loving warpig (nice phrase)? Are lesbians couples prone to homocidal rage more so than hetero couples?

"fuck every man who thinks she must be a dyke because she's a strong woman"

What if we think she's gay because she's 50 and never been married?

Disgusting how the left (communists, socialists, democrats) hate a brilliant woman who disproves all the left's lies and refuses to live in the state of slavery that the left has prepared for her.
The left is really annoyed with her, because she disproves their favorite lie: that Bush is a racist.
The left is where racism lives.

The question is: does she have a boyfriend. If not, I'm going for it.

Hey Condi, if you are not on the faculty of Muffdiver U, I'm there for you in a nanaosecond. Articulate, good presence, no small amount of charm. Condi v. Hillary - what is the gutter press going to make of that? Two carpet cleaners going head to head. Condi, if you are going to give it a shot, resign to give yourself enough time to distance yourself from Bush and his grisly mob, and don't let Karl Rove near you. How can we lecture the world about democracy, when that creature is in the government? I'm rambling - I need some coffee.

I admire Ms. Rice especially when she left alabama enviroment and travel to the university of denver to persue academic achievements. Certainly a whole new world of knowledge and wonderful activities open up a new realm to her life. Her energy is consumed by politics, government and economics, but I could speculate that in moments of leisure , she must certainly avail herself to give pleasure to a fine gentleman of excellent character.

I greatly admire Ms. Rice for her achievements as well as the work she is doing. I don't judge her by race, but the job she is doing and her character. As a mail I find her extremely powerful as well as attractive. Regardless of her Party affiliation I think she would make a great president as well as a wonderful NFL Commisioner.

I think that Condi is very inspirational, and frankly its a little strange that she's like 51 and unmarried. Ive heard she was out as a lesbian when she was teaching at Stanford, no one cared, but now that she works for this world class bigot, she's got to keep her sexuality under wraps.

She's got this magnetism about her.....she makes me hot. I am a 19 year old lesbian and i think she's totally inspirational. And totally totally gay.

I'm a Stanford student, and it aint no rumor Rice is a Dyke, its a fact.

As for lesbians. Man, if you're an ugly bitch, what else is left?

Only porn mags have cute lesbians, and that's just for the guys. Real life, uh-uh U.G.L.Y.

I'm ashamed our foreign policy is run by a butch.

But hey, it shows. One's a bigot, the other's a butch. We're damned.

Back when I was applying to colleges, it was considered a real honor to be admitted to Stanford.

Ali's IP address is 71.131.223.115, which is in Novato, which is a good 60 miles away from Stanford. I doubt he's a genuine Stanford student.

I do not know whether Dr. Rice is a lesbian or not. If she is then I question her integrity for supporting an administration that is largely anti gay. On one hand I agree that her sexuality, as long as it involves only consenting adults, is not only non of my business but no grounds upon which to determine her capability of holding the office of Secretary of State or even running for president.

But if she is a lesbian then I question her integrity. It is as if a white politician working for the Ku Klux Klan objects to be tarred as a racist. By working for one of the most anti gay administration in our recent history, if she is a lesbian is a hypocrite and that would or should prevent her being qualified to run for president.

I don't think it's a bad thing if she's a lesbian, and I don't think it's an "allegation", HOWEVER. She supports an administration that is against gay marriage. That would make her a rather fucked up sad hypocrite who has had to make some awful compromises to get where she is now. Kind of scary.

Incidentally, I've now heard this Condi is gay rumor from two separate, rather reliable sources (ie not the internet, but people who know someone who knows her). So it may well be true. The sad part is that a) it can be considered an accusation because being gay is supposed to be a handicap, and b) it's considered a handicap because of policies that she herself supports by supporting Bush. AAARRRGGGHH!

Maybe she doesn't think everything is about her? Maybe she's made an evaluation about what she thinks is better for society, and follows her conscience instead of her narrow self-interest as interpreted by you? Or maybe she thinks gay marriage is a trivial issue that doesn't merit divorcing herself from the more important issues of conservatism?
