Nick Denton, a British entrepreneur and self-styled "play magazine editor,"
seems a
little upset at what Choire Sicha calls
"a big slobbery crotchkiss
from the Gray Lady" today. Personally, I'd be more upset at the photo
Jake Dobkin took of him at the Fleshbot launch party.
Free advice for Nick: after having a similar run-in myself, I've learned optimal Jake Dobkin technique.
Three thoughts on Nick Denton's dilemma with exposure being both good and bad:
1) If an article in the NYT is still the mark of having arrived, then it follows bloggers are not nearly as self-confident about their trade as old media. Still. Maybe it's just going to take a while for bloggers to stop thinking of themselves as a reactive medium, "keeping real media honest" or somesuch, eventhough they are often the trend/gossip/commentary avantgarde (Paris, Charles, Persian blogs).
2) What does Nick want? Does he want to make money or not? If he thinks there is no money in it for a good while longer, why is he doing it? For the love of the genre would be a good enough answer for me, but part of me wonders if it might not also be a ruse to stave of the Calcanises (sp?).
3) If he waxes nostalgic about the good old days when his blogs had daily readerships in the low thousands, then MemeFirst must be experiencing its heydays right now!
4) What does he do all day, besides needling Choire about his cheap salary? How long can it take to install Movable Type and draw some hexagons?

No, of course you don't. You've already been guilty of causing that to happen many, many times through First Tuesday.
Posted by: mark zerdin on November 18, 2003 01:46 PMThe thing you have to learn about Nick Denton is he's not a new beast. But we all thought his kind was dead after the dot-com bust back in the day. Now he's got one very sucessful blog and an array of other questionable blogs. It's like after GAWKER succeeded he went on a cocain binge and bought up tons of stupid domain names like kinja, wonkette, flashbot, gizmodo and such and thinks that lightning will strike twice.
Alert to Nick Deton's Dept Holders: Cash in now, because it a year from now he might be another dot com nobody.
