Well, it would seem we're in the top ten, at least according to New York Magazine (check out question 25). I would urge you all to go there and vote for MF, but
Still, it's nice to be recognised. Thank you to whomever put us on the list, even if you're someone I promised I'd never mention here again.
wow - congrats on getting nominated... I did find that I wanted to write in quite a bit... Oh well.

The nomination is also ironic, and I use that term advisedly, considering that the percentage of NYC-domiciled contributors to MemeFirst has just diminished by 50%, to one, the plurality of contributors is British, it was designed by a Belgian living in Sweden, and all its American contributors live on the Pacific rim.
But -- wait for it -- I guess we're all New Yorkers at heart. Where else could MemeFirst be nominated in a regional competition?
Posted by: Stefan Geens on January 14, 2004 12:20 AMDefinitely still a New Yawker at heart.
Cannot wait for traffic signals to cross the road, particularly in Singapore.
I sense of the spirit of He Who Shall Not Be Named hovering, struggling not to comment. The the dark side of the Force will prevail.
Posted by: Jame on January 14, 2004 01:26 AMYou have no idea. Matthew and I had a 1600-word IM conversation about this very posting. Although I have to admit it was basically all about whomever vs whoever. I was right, of course, but he was stubborn. IM transcript available to anybody who wants it upon request...
Posted by: Felix on January 14, 2004 02:50 AMYou'd choose the novelist, obviously. Nowadays, science has become such a cooperative venture that they always have difficulty deciding who should get the prize for discovering X. The individual award for scientific discovery is an anachronism, but is far from that for literary endeavour.
On the same logic, I'd choose Crobar, on the grounds that Pianos is an incredibly naff name. And Gothamist amongst the websites because I really liked the site that won the Guardian award and this one looks a bit like it.
Posted by: Charles on January 14, 2004 02:50 PMi'm not above begging, and i'm worried jen will commit subuku if we don't win, so please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please vote for gothamist. if it helps, jen said she be happy to pose in a union jack bikini while singing god save the queen. go brits!
Posted by: jake on January 14, 2004 04:51 PMactually i think memefirst is a better site than any of the others on that list. unlike us, none of the contributors compare their breast sizes, none of them worry about male lactation, and none of them offer an opportunity for me to be incredibly rude to my friends in an increasingly public manner, in a way they have to swallow because it's all in the service of seeming to have an interesting blog.
no, they all clart on about stuff about new york this, new york that, and none of us who live outside new york is remotely interested. this is why i think MF should win best new york blog.
may i just say, by the way, that i view this nomination as a personal triumph. i think we all know who's responsible for MF's "success."
Posted by: eurof on January 14, 2004 05:07 PMJake, just send us a couple of Gothamist T-shirts, with Jen in them, and we'll gladly withdraw our nomination while endorsing Gothamist.
Posted by: Stefan Geens on January 14, 2004 05:57 PMCan we withdraw our nomination when we didn't nominate ourselves in the first place? Like refusing an OBE? Although, in fact, you can't refuse being *nominated* for an OBE.
No, in all, I think we have to wait until we don't win to say we didn't want to win anyway. Its the only decent thing to do.
Meanwhile, I too view the nomination as a personal triumph, as the person who single-handedly against incredible odds got Eurof onto the contributor list in the first place. Clearly the site was nominated for its creative use of the word clart, so its all due to that.
At the same time, I would also note that a more recent change in the list of contributors is the nearest event to nomination, and may be the causal factor...
Posted by: Charles on January 14, 2004 07:06 PMPS, six out of the ten nominees already note the nomination on their pages. And while we're at it, all of them are also inter-referential, sometimes in a symbiotic manner, but its clear who's on top. God you're all so NYrcissistic.
Posted by: charles on January 14, 2004 10:29 PMJake, it's seppuku, not subuku.
I know I've returned to this thread several days too late for anyone to actually read this, but it would have bothered me all evening had I let it go.
