iChat AViation

Sometimes technology creeps up on you, goes boo!, and suddenly you realize you are living in yesterday's science fiction. Wireless broadband is now offered on several Lufthansa flights, and hence iChat AV video conferencing, as these Apple employees enjoy telling us:

And it's just occurred to me that this satellite broadband should mean airlines can now install security cameras on board, allowing ground control to see who is in control of the plane. Blackbox info should be sendable via satellite, so we no longer have to dive for it if something goes disastrously wrong...

And there is still room for a further first: iChat AV videoconferencing between users on the two different Lufthansa flights that currently offer the service.

Additionally, blogging is all about conversation, and commenting facilitates. Occasionally, this includes talking to oneself.

...and yet try to get Amtrak to get internet on their only profitable line.

while they do mention that ambient noise was a bitch, i'm surprised they don't talk about latency issues at all, which i imagine would be difficult.

Anyone else notice that's not a 777 as they claim (4 engines vs 2)?

Morland:

a quick survey of all my pilot friends (ok, there's only one of them, but i'd like to pretend i have an entire flight crew at my disposal) reveals:

"[Besides the 747] there are some 707's that still fly commercial from Miami to South America.† Granted they are cargo.† Commercial passenger - Airbus A340, Iluyishin-32, AvroJet, and the Dash-7, off the top of my head."

I'd like to think Lufthansa is flying Iluyishins across an ocean and two continents (I got to fly one from Nassau to Havana- glad to have made it alive), but I doubt it.

The flight, LH452, is listed here as being an A-340. And an A340 has 4 engines. So an Apple copywriter made that part up.

Excellent. I wonder why they bothered mentioning the airplane model if they weren't going to verify it.

Wait, no, scratch that - I know a few PR copywriters.

I wonder if we can take at face value the info in the screen grab: "Sales should be up significantly this quarter"...

As of early 2001, "Eric Zelenka" was working on server software- one would imagine he's moved up the ladder, and server programming management. You don't hear of Apple as a strong server-side platform.

maybe he's just riding the iTunes Music Store coattails.

Look, Apple changed the page! It now mentions "an Airbus" instead of a Boeing 777. (OK, I admit, I sent feedback an email.)

Bow down to the awsome power of one.
