Sunday copy editors the world over had to deal with Cheney's hunting accident today. How did they fare? From best to worst:
The Good:
Cheney Shoots, Injures Man While Hunting (NBC) - The only one to mention the victim isn't dead.
Cheney shoots man in hunt error (BBC) - Points for avoiding the word "accidentally"
Cheney accidentally shoots hunting companion: CNN (Reuters) - The textbook answer.
Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter (AP) - Clear, and shorter than Reuters.
Dick Cheney misses bird, hits fellow hunter (CBC News, Canada) - Nice variation on a theme.
The Bad:
Cheney 'accidentally shoots man' (Channel 4 News, UK) - The fact that he was out hunting would add some context, no?
Cheney Shoots Man While Hunting (CBS) - Did they have an argument that got out of hand?
Cheney involved in shooting incident (RTE) - So who's the victim?
VP Dick Cheney Accidentally Shoots Hunting Partner (WLTX.com) - Oh, that Cheney.
Cheney accidentally shoots 78-year-old man (Think Progress) - As opposed to his 58-year old wife.
Dick Cheney shoots fellow hunter in Texas (UPI) - Did he go all the way there especially?
The Ugly:
Cheney Shoots Lawyer in Hunting Accident (Axcess News) - No great loss, then.
"Cheney Shoots, Injures Man While Hunting"
This gives me the feeling that Cheney has a really poor aim in that he only injured his target.
How about:
"Cheney provides example to America of why guns should be outlawed"

Posted by: Gherimiah on February 13, 2006 01:43 PM"Cheney hunts quail and everyone else ducks" from one of the Australian papers this morning.
Posted by: Kartika on February 13, 2006 09:55 PM8th rule of Cheney's Club; if it's your first time in the Rose Garden, you have to fight.
Posted by: bafc23 on February 15, 2006 04:29 PMI just like the fact that the issue that the Veep might have just been a little (read as a LOT) loaded when this happened. As a side note, getting shot from 30 yards with bird shot would not have given the high amount of shot in the victims body. Nope, this is just another example of why guns and booze do not mix.
A friend of mine wracked his Volvo up under the influence and limped home on a bare rim. When the cops showed up, he was asleep and his dad told them they'd have to stop by in the morning. All of which is pretty much what happened for Cheney except his dad is dirt these days.
Posted by: Sanford on February 15, 2006 06:30 PMIt's surprising how little the UK is making of this. But not entirely surprising. This is after all the country that values verminous animals over deprived children (Anyone who doubts this should look at the amount of time the commons wasted discussing foxes rather than humans in 2004-2005). I love my country, all except for its pathological attachment to animals. You'll always get more headlines as a shot piece of vermin or general second rate mammal than than a human in the UK. If Cheyney had shot a vole the UK would be on the streets.
