Unsurprisingly, and perhaps rather annoyingly, they're
fake. a friend of mine works on the Puma advertising
account. she likes these, but they ain't Puma

Gawker says that according to AdRants, they're real, have run in the Brazilian edition of Maxim, and are due to run in Europe, too.

According to Maxim's masthead there is no edition in Brazil.

 I've
been doing a bit of digging around myself, trying to find out whether
there really is a Brazilian version of Maxim. How many editions are
listed on the masthead?

 i
work at maxim u.s. we do have a latin american edition, which is sold
in brazil, but no particular brazilian edition. in all, there are 13
international versions (including u.s. maxim). i don't know anything
about the puma ad running in the latin american edition, although i
wouldn't be surprised if it did.

 Latest
theorizing around here goes that the ads are real, the gobs of
suspicious goo are not, those were photoshopped. This would explain the
high production value of the photos.

The fake Puma ads |

 i
just noticed this, a month or whatever it's been since they originally
surfaced. a key indicator that we should have noticed of their
inauthenticity: the blue pumas in the first fake ad are not new, nor
are they even clean looking. The circular indentations along the side
of the sole have bits of mud stuck to them. I can't think of many
campaigns that have used anything but new items in the shoots.

Hehe... an interesting game comes to mind...
Then, who is up for this challenge?
Can you identify and state the aspects of the ads that YOU believe
are 100% legitimate versus the aspects that you believe are not?
(Author wrings hands.)
